We are working towards more sustainable business practices and minimising our environmental impact.

Redman Fisher, part of Hill & Smith PLC, have been manufacturing in the UK for over 100 years and now, more than ever, we are committed to protecting the world we live in and enhancing lives through our ESG initiatives.

The Hill & Smith ESG strategy is aligned with the group’s purpose of creating sustainable infrastructure and safe transport through innovation. At Redman Fisher, our actions are aligned with that of Hill & Smith and we continue to work hard to ensure that improving sustainability is woven into our daily working lives.

All our environmental management systems are certified to ISO14001:2015 through LRQA.

We are committed to reaching Carbon Net Zero by 2040 and have developed a Carbon Reduction Plan to show how we will support this target reduce our carbon emissions over the next 5 years.

With our Carbon Reduction Plan in place, we estimate our impact will be:

  • A total electricity saving of 3kWh/tonne steel produced.
  • A total carbon reduction of 340Te or 037Te CO2e/tonne steel produced.

Our Employees

Our UK parent Lionweld Kennedy, have developed an award-winning apprenticeship programme, with 10 of our apprentices being employed in 2021. We are committed to further developing our programme and truly believe in providing vital opportunities to develop talent and provide skilled roles in our community. In 2022, we have been ranked as one of the top 50 SME apprentice employers in the country by the UK government. We also work with local schools and colleges to provide work experience and workplace tours.

We have an employee-led charity committee promoting money raising activities to support local good causes and we also operate an employee engagement committee to listen to our employees’ suggestions and concerns, encouraging a happier and more motivated workplace.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan

The installation of solar panels at our manufacturing facility in Middlesbrough will generate an estimated 300,000kWh of electricity annually and see an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of 70 Tonnes.

We operate an energy monitoring and reduction programme to reduce our carbon impact year on year.

We have carried out energy awareness training with all employees and continue to raise awareness of our mission to be more sustainable.

We are replacing our fleet of diesel forklift trucks and Combi-Lifts to fully electric, resulting in an annual reduction of 10,000 litres of diesel (25 Tonnes of CO2e).

The development of our ‘Safegrid’ steel flooring panels will see an estimated reduction in steel of over 185 Tonnes per year. In addition, the estimated electricity savings for this process are at least 6% (6.5kwh/Te reduction).

Our rationalised steel flooring product range will result in a 20% reduction in electricity due to the lesser number of cross wire welds required (22kwh/Te reduction).

We are actively investigating heat recovery systems for the extraction systems in production areas.

From Autumn/Winter 2022, our Middlesbrough site will be 100% heated by Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) which could result in a reduction in carbon use of 250 Tonnes of CO2e per year (or 37% reduction of CO2e annually).
